Rush Wall Solar Farm Refused

Rush Wall Solar Farm Refused

Blue tailed damselfly (Andy Karran)

We’re hugely relieved with the news that the Rushwall Solar development, on the Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) in Redwick, has been refused today.

We agree with the minister’s decision. After a three-year battle, this is highly positive news for our beautiful and fragile Gwent Levels and its vital wildlife.

Of course, we fully appreciate the need for renewable energy in Wales, but there are hundreds of thousands of acres of land throughout Wales (including in Gwent) which are far more suitable for solar development than the Gwent Levels, which are designated at the UK level for its wildlife interest, and a registered historic landscape of historic interest.

We hope that this decision marks a turning point in the protection of the Gwent Levels’ wildlife and ancient landscape, and that decisions in respect of the tsunami of development proposals already in the planning system go the same way.

We call on the Welsh Government and the Senedd to bring about a halt in major development on the Gwent levels - future generations will thank them for it.
