Smooth newt
You are likely to spot the smooth newt in your garden or local pond. It breeds in water in summer and spends the rest of the year in grassland and woodland, hibernating over winter.

Gwent Wildlife Trust oppose all development proposals on protected Sites of Special Scientific Interest as they are the jewels in the crown of Gwent’s wildlife heritage.
Whilst we support renewable energy, we believe it must be the right development in the right place. SSSIs, including this one at Magor, should not be developed as we cannot destroy the environment to save the environment.
There are tens of thousands of acres of land throughout Wales which are much more suited to solar farms than SSSIs.

Grass snake
The grass snake is our longest snake, but don't worry if you find one in the compost heap - it's harmless! Look out for this green and yellow beauty in grasslands and wetlands, too.
