November element - Soil

Where would we be without soil?! It anchors roots, stores water, feeds life, and supports an entire underground ecosystem. Support your soil this month!

With November here and autumn in full force, soon will come a cold crisp winter. But for now it’s time to turn our focus underground, to one of the most vital yet overlooked parts of any garden: the soil.

Where would we be without it!?!

Soil does so much more than hold up plants. It anchors roots, stores water, feeds life, and supports an entire underground ecosystem, from fungi and microbes to worms and beetles. It’s the hidden heartbeat of every thriving garden and the foundation of all life above it.

Yet in so many gardens, soil is mistreated, it is being covered over at a faster and vaster rate than ever by nasty products like fake turf, over use of hard landscaped areas e.g. slabs and then there's plastic membranes and nasty chemicals being used by humans too. When we strip soil of life and access we break the chain that connects everything.

There is a whole eco-system that relies on exposed soil, but many gardens leave minimal options which also leads to drainage issues.

As well as thousands of micro-organisms, there are other species such as some caterpillars, bees, beetles, voles and fungi which need soil access; it’s part of their life cycles.

So this month, try to give soil a chance to breathe again.

  • Leave some areas exposed.
  • Let fallen leaves and old stems break down naturally.
  • Avoid chemicals and over-hardscaping.

Healthy soil means healthy plants, thriving wildlife, and a living, breathing garden.
