30 Days Wild - week four

30 Days Wild - week four

Another week packed with wildness! Starting off with summer solstice, the awesome Big Wild Weekend filled with music and quizzes, and all this glorious sunshine – what a treat!

New Fox on the Block! Lucy Holland

As for my trail camera updates here in the Wye Valley, there’s a new fantastic fox on the block! Check out this video of this beautiful fox who I recently caught on one of my trail cameras.

Along with this new fox, I have also identified two other foxes that use this patch of forest, Crooky and Fuzz. What shall I call this new fox? Suggestions so far are Hendrix, Meryl Streep and Mr Curious Fox!

Moth observations

This week I carried out some mothwatering nocturnal observations. Using an inferred head torch, I set out to look for moths! I was firstly greeted by Pipistrelle bats flying overhead, hoots of owls, hungry snails and slugs … and eventually some Mother of Pearl moths, yay!

Broad Bodied Chaser

This week has also been International Insect Week, and following on from my bioblitz last week I’ve carried on looking for bugs! I was thrilled to see that the dragons have arrived, and I managed to get a snap of this Broad Bodied Chaser.

During lockdown there’s been an increase of people enjoying nature’s benefits, which is so amazing! However, understandably due to lockdown restrictions, organisations dedicated to conserving wildlife have suffered. It is so important to support the amazing work of organisations such as the Wildlife Trusts, especially at a time when they might need it most.

I have been thinking about ways that I can help and this week I decided to get my 30 Days Wild creative hat on. With a helping hand from my partner, we carved hearts from salvaged wood and I have hand painted them to create a wildlife collection. I’ve created this wildlife collection to sell and 100% of the proceeds will go to Gwent Wildlife Trust. So far I have painted a deer, badger, bee, butterfly, foxes and I’m working on a kingfisher and buzzard. These hearts have already been swept up, but if anyone is interested in purchasing one, I can make more.

Stay safe and I trust you’ll keep it wild!
