Bird Nest-Box Monitors - Position filled

Richard Waller

Available: Any day

Become a nest box monitor & help us count the number of nests & fledglings for each breeding season.

Do you fancy getting out into our reserves during spring and summer, meeting other wildlife volunteers, and getting up close to some of Gwent’s most beautiful wildlife? Then we need you! We need nest-box checkers for this year's breeding season.

Monitors go out in pairs, and visit their route each week from mid-April to mid-June, check each box and record progress with nest making, eggs or young birds. Full training will be given and you will need to be of a reasonable physical fitness.

This nestbox scheme has been growing since 2009, and now nearly 70 volunteers monitor over 800 boxes across 38 routes, mostly in GWT reserves. But we do still need more monitors, as some have to drop out for various reasons, and we are always expanding or adding routes. The British Trust for Ornithology uses the data to produce trends in bird productivity and this helps conservationists track the health of bird populations and highlight possible causes of decline.

Training is provided if you need it, and you will be shown all the nest boxes on your first visit. Please see below for a list of sites that need volunteers.
