Strawberry Cottage Wood lies on a SW facing
slope of the River Honddu and consists of upland sessile oak
with pockets of silver birch and a hazel understory. Lower
down the slope, ash becomes frequent while beech is confined to
a small area of mature trees.
Species
Flowers include Slender St John's-wort,
violets, yellow archangel and wood melick. There are two
mature specimens of the wild service tree, one of
Britain's rarest trees. This has maple like leaves and
white flowers which turn into brown, leathery fruits.
Many woodland birds have been recorded such as
pied and spotted flycatchers, redstart, woodcock, sparrowhawk
and all three species of woodpecker. Grass snakes have
also been seen.
