Coed Meyric Moel   0.8 Ha

An urban reserve that includes a small meadow, bramble scrub and ancient woodland, an excellent site for butterflies and other insects.

Species

The woodland is varied with oak, ash and some large birch trees, holly and hazel.  Some is damper with alder, cherry, beech and sycamore.  Around the edge are planted species such as dogwood and field maple.

Hard fern and broad buckler fern grow in the wood and in places, dog's mercury covers the woodland floor with a splash of colour from bluebells in May.  Meadow flowers include Knapweed.  Butterflies such as meadow brown and small skipper can be seen along with hoverflies and a range of beetles.

Resident birds include nuthatch and treecreeper, blackcaps in spring and summer and siskin during the winter.

Location

From Cwmbran, go south along the A4051 towards Newport. Turn left at the first roundabout along Hollybush Way and go straight across the next roundabout onto Penylan Way.  Coed Meyric is about 600m on the left hand side.  To park, continue along Penylan Way past the wood to a roundabout and turn left onto Henllys way, then left again into Tramway Close.  The reserve is reached by joining the footpath running along the northern side of the wood.
