A group of Gwent Wildlife Trust (GWT) volunteers have scooped a top award for their dedication to the Trust and environmental work in the Livings Valleys area.

Volunteers from the GWT’s Livings Valleys team, were named the Blaenau Gwent Volunteer Achievement Awards Environmental Volunteer Winners 2017, at the Gwent Association of Voluntary Organisations (GAVO) award ceremony.

Senior Reserves Officer Tom Eyles and some of the volunteers attended the awards ceremony at the Ebbw Vale Institute, earlier this month.

Tom said: “We decided to enter all the Living Valleys volunteers into the GAVO awards, as they have such a wide ranging set of skills which are being utilised with us, in different ways, on a daily basis.
“We had never entered anything like this before, so were pleasantly surprised when we received an invitation to the ceremony. Five of our long-standing volunteers represented the group along with myself.
“We did not expect to win and were surprised to receive the award for environmental volunteers of the year. This is a very well deserved recognition of the hard working volunteers in the Living Valleys area, who have been involved for the past seven years at the Environmental Resource Centre, (ERC) and for some even longer than that.”
GWT’s Living Valleys team are based at the ERC. Their conservation work covers areas including Blaenau Gwent, Torfaen and Caerphilly.
There are currently 30 volunteers helping in the Living Valleys area. Volunteer tasks vary from office helpers, Tuesday practical volunteers, Sunday volunteers, volunteer shepherds, butterfly recorders, bird box monitors and volunteer wardens.
Tom added: “We have such a diverse group who give so much on a weekly basis and certainly enrich our working week with their company, we would be pretty lost without them. A huge thank you and well done to all of you, you know who you are.”
