The Wern Nature Reserve   3.4 Ha


Lying on a steep slope, this reserve is bracken covered with areas of open woodland and scattered veteran birch and yew trees.  There are fine views over Monmouth and the Monnow valley.

Species

There are scattered patches of bluebells, bilberry plus climbing corydalis.  Ferns, mosses and liverworts can be found on the old stone boundary walls and rocky outcrops.  Clumps of opposite leaved golden saxifrage can be seen growing in the marshy area beside the small stream. 
 

The Wern Reserve

Location

From Monmouth, leave south on the B4293 signposted Trellech and Mitchel Troy.  One mile from Monmouth take the left fork signposted Trellech,  Penallt and Chepstow.  Continue up the hill for 2 miles passing the turn on the left signposted Penallt and taking the next turning right for Craig y Dorth.  Follow this road past the phone box to a turning to the right just below Wern farm.  Park in a small layby opposite the turning at the public footpath sign.  Access to the reserve is via the public footpath.
