Priory Wood is a good example of ancient
semi-natural woodland. There are a fine range of trees
including cherry, oak, ash, birch, beech and yew. There
are old limestone quarry workings in the eastern end and parts
of the wood have been coppiced in the past.
Species
A varied woodland flora. Many bluebells
in spring. A good variety of ferns including hard shield
fern. Birds include spotted and pied flycatchers,
sparrowhawk and woodcock. Hawfinches have been sighted.
Noctule bats roost in the mature trees and yellow necked mouse
occurs.
