Peterstone Wentlooge Marshes    SSSI  40 Ha


This coastal reserve lies along the foreshore of the outer Severn Estuary and is an outstanding site for watching birds which are attracted to the rich feeding grounds of the saltmarsh and muddy tidal fields.

Species

In winter the site supports many birds such as curlew, dunlin, redshank, knot, turnstone and oystercatcher.  The site is notable for a range of duck such as shelduck, teal, wigeon, shoveler and pintail.

Short eared owl may be seen in daylight plus a hunting peregrine or a merlin.  Rarities oberved include spotted crane, avocet and broad billed sandpiper. 

Access

A short walk down a public footpath and up onto the sea wall.

Location

Leave the M4 at Junction 28 and follow the A48 towards Newport City Centre.  At the second roundabout take the B4239 to Duffryn.  Follow this road past a school, across the narrow railway bridge and out of the city for about 4 miles to reach the village of Peterstone Wentlooge.  Park in the large car park opposite the church.  Immediately opposite the lay-by take the public footpath alongside the church, signposted Sea Wall.  The reserve is the other side of the sea wall.
