Lower Minnetts Field Local Wildlife Site is a fine example of
semi-improved, species rich, calcareous grassland. A range of
calcareous indicator species, most notably agrimony and lady’s
bedstraw, make a vibrant display during the spring and summer.
Common spotted orchids are becoming increasingly frequent and link
with the nearby Gwent Wildlife Trusts’ Rogiet Poorland reserve via
the roadside verges.

Management
This small rural site is managed for its lowland species rich
calcareous grassland, which is rare in the county. It is currently
managed as a hay meadow, with an annual late summer hay cut and
aftermath grazing by a few sheep and horses.
The scrub transition zone is also an important habitat and is
managed to maintain its’ species and structural diversity. Invasive
bracken and ragwort within the meadow are controlled manually by
volunteers.
The Reserve is owned by the Forestry Commission but managed by Gwent
Wildlife Trust who have a 10 year management agreement to maintain
the site for its wildlife value. |

Education
The site is important as an educational tool, and the species rich
nature of the grassland and diversity of habitats ensures there are
plenty of plant and insect species, including large numbers of
gatekeeper butterflies, to be observed by children attending the
nearby forest school.
Location
Turn off the B4245 road in Rogiet opposite the turning to the Severn
Tunnel Junction. Pass under the motorway left along Minnetts Lane.
The Reserve entrance is half a mile on the left, just before the
Slade Woods car park.
