At Brockwells Meadows the lime-rich soil
promotes a wide diversity of grassland flowers. Over
seventy species of plant have been recorded. The four
fields of unimproved grassland are grazed and cut for hay in
rotation. After the hay is cut in late June, cattle are
brought onto the fields. Their cow pats are an important
breeding site for several species of rare insects, particularly
the hornet robber-fly.
Species
Notable species include green-winged orchid,
autumn lady's tresses, large thyme and yellow wort. Rare
insects include the great green bush cricket, the hornet
robber-fly and a very rare solitary bee Andrena battorfiana.
Many species of moth and butterfly have been recorded.
