Gwent’s Living Churchyards Project -
GRAB AN ENVIRONMENTAL GRANT!

Monmouthshire’s Community Environmental Grants are now available. These grants, of up to £1000, could be just what you need if your school or community group is looking for a cash boost to help with a project which will benefit your local community.

There are four different types of grant:

  • Environment and Countryside Grants - fund projects that help people to enjoy and understand the countryside.

  • Community Pride Grants - help local communities celebrate what is special about their locality and foster pride in their local area.

  • Schools Sustainable Development Grants - enable schools to improve their sustainability

  • Biodiversity Grants - enhance important habitats, such as Local Wildlife Sites and increase the numbers of important species.

The Countryside Council for Wales has contributed to the Community Environmental Grants.

Last year over 40 projects received funding through this grants scheme including:

  • An accessible garden area with raised beds created Bailey Court Residents Association,
“The project brought together elderly retired people to share and enjoy each other’s company. It has truly relaunched the community spirit in our court.”

  • Habitat creation days at Goytre Fawr Primary School :
“The habitat days were a great success and the children learned a huge amount, from DT skills to caring for wildlife, and thoroughly enjoyed themselves. All the habitats have now been placed around the school grounds and we are watching and waiting to see who comes to stay!”

  • New notice board for Llanddewi Skirrid Village Hall:
“The support given to the hall by Monmouthshire County Council will enable us to keep our village up to date. The new notice board will be a great asset to inform people about village, church and other local events.”

  • Tree and shrub planting by Usk in Bloom:
“The funding will increase wildlife-friendly tree and bush planting within the town of Usk . As well as being good for wildlife, it will enhance the enjoyment of residents and visitors”

  • Developing a wildlife garden and wildlife areas in Monmouth Comprehensive School :
“It is important that we create a wildlife haven that reflects our environment in Monmouthshire. Our garden will support our local species and reflect the changes that each season brings.”

These grants have helped many community groups take practical steps to look after and enhance their local environment. This really is sustainable development in action.

The closing date for applications is Friday 18th July 2008.
