This initiative concentrates on identifying areas of
species rich grassland, advising and supporting
landowners, providing contacts for contract work such a
hedgelaying and identifying areas suitable for
wildflower meadow restoration or creation. It
works closely with other groups such as the
Monmouthshire Meadows Group.
How are sites identified?
Sites for survey are initially targeted through the
study of existing habitat survey data followed by field
visits. Sites are then assessed against a set of
Wildlife Site Criteria covering faunal and floral
interest.
Why are they valuable?
Grasslands are vital in providing refuges for flora and
fauna and creating a network of sites acting as
corridors for migration and dispersal. They are one of
the most important places for wildlife outside of
protected areas such as Sites of Special Scientific
Interest (SSSI). We have lost 97% of our meadows
in the last 50 years, More information:-
