Senior Conservation Grazing Officer

Salary: £25,345 to £26,172 + pension contribution

Gwent Wildlife Trust is seeking to recruit a full-time Senior Conservation Grazing Officer, working within the Usk to Wye (U2W) Living Landscape team. This is a permanent, full-time position.

The post holder will develop and implement our conservation grazing operations within U2W nature reserves, act as a first point of call for conservation grazing, manage our organic, pasture fed meat-box scheme and be responsible for the day to day management and welfare of GWT’s rare breed sheep and cattle. In addition, this post will be managing cattle grazing across a number of project based, lowland heathland sites within the Monmouthshire. The post is based near Monmouth.

Other duties will include overseeing a team of volunteer ‘shepherds’, managing contractors, undertaking practical site management work, survey and monitoring, potentially leading practical engagement activities for volunteer groups, and working within the Living Landscape team to deliver better outcomes for wildlife.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and practical individual with extensive experience in cattle and sheep husbandry. Trained to a high standard, the ideal candidate will have experience of stock handling, use of veterinary medication, wildlife conservation and management of nature reserves, able to use trailers, tractors, machinery and ATVs, preferably have experience in working with contractors and who can happily engage volunteers and the public. They need to be practical, passionate and knowledgeable about wildlife, work in all weathers and have a real desire to manage livestock and conservation grazing to help wildlife flourish.
