Water voles have the unfortunate claim to fame of being the fastest declining mammal in the UK. In Wales, their population has crashed by over 90% since the 1980s. They may not be the most conspicuous of our wetland wildlife but they play a vital role in shaping their habitats for the benefit of many other species.

Gwent Wildlife Trust is working alongside WWT and Eagle Reintroduction Wales, combining expertise in conservation science, species recovery and reintroductions, land management and community engagement. The British Bird of Prey Centre are also playing a vital role in education and engagement, helping people connect with white-tailed eagles up close before they return to Welsh skies.

Our nature reserves have been used as locations by a wide range of media. The nature of requests vary widely and we are usually happy to accommodate them if possible as long as disturbance to wildlife can be kept to a minimum.

Many people cannot access all or part of our reserves, for a variety of reasons, the Digital Nature Reserves experience offers a whole new way to explore them and allows you to learn about wildlife, conservation and our reserves on your device.

Our summers are getting drier and our winters wetter. With more frequent storms, more intense rain events and increasing risk of flooding, we must find ways to slow water movement across landscapes. Reintroducing woody debris into streams is now a key focus in river restoration and national flood risk policies, supporting the principles of Natural Flood Management.
