Caerphilly Council’s biodiversity team are looking for roadside
verges that support wild flowers. Roadside verges can be significant
refuges for plants, insects, mammals and birds when their original
habitats are lost. They are also very important in helping wildlife
move from place to place – their road network runs alongside ours!
If you know of a verge in Caerphilly borough that has lots of wild
flowers, please let Maggie Iles (Biodiversity Officer for
Caerphilly) know by telephoning 01495 235253 or email
ilesm@caerphilly.gov.uk.
The council will then arrange for the verge to be surveyed, and will
look at how they can protect and manage the wildlife there.
If you know of a wildflower verge elsewhere in Gwent – please let
Gwent Wildlife Trust know. It may be that they can be added to
existing verge protection schemes or contribute to future roadside
verge projects. Please be careful when looking at verges – do not
risk harm to yourself or other road users.
