This reserve is a species-rich grassland, typical of the traditional
Gwent levels landscape, with grazing marsh and drainage ditches,
called reens. The fields support a good range of flowers,
which should increase with the Trust's management.
Species
The flora includes reeds, rushes and sedges in the damper areas.
In the drier grassland areas, species such as meadow vetchling can
be found along with specialities such as southern marsh orchid and
the rare grass vetchling. Until it produces its small crimson
flowers, grass vetchling can grow up unnoticed in a field of tall
grass due to it having no true leaves, only long narrow stipules
which resemble the blades of grass.
The site provides good habitat for reed bunting, sedge warbler and
yellow wagtail. The trust hopes to encourage lapwing to return
here.
