Help our water vole project win big in Tesco’s Bags of Help initiative!

Tuesday 3rd January 2017

We are delighted that our Magnificent Marshy Mammals project has been shortlisted for a public vote in the Tesco Bags of Help initiative! Please help us by voting when you shop in Tesco this January.

Children love to learn outside and we want to help them do it! This funding will bring school children to our beautiful Magor Marsh reserve, near Newport, to learn about our wonderful wildlife -- including our water voles!

Our project along with two others in our region will go forward to a vote in Tesco stores where customers can vote for their favourite project each time they shop. Voting will take place from 2nd January to 28th January. The project with the highest number of votes across our region will receive £5,000, the second placed project £2,000 and the third placed project £1,000.

Gwent Wildlife Trust owns a beautiful wetland reserve called Magor Marsh, close to the city of Newport on the Gwent Levels. We have an Education Centre here where our Education Officers Kathy and Petra cannot wait to welcome school children from Newport to come and learn about our wonderful wildlife.

It is well known that children greatly benefit from learning outdoors. It tackles social mobility, giving children new and exciting experiences that inspire them to reach their true potential. It re-motivates children who do not thrive in the traditional classroom environment. It addresses educational standards back inside the classroom, raising attainment, reducing truancy and improving discipline. Sadly, the modern world means children's access to the countryside is becoming more and more restricted. We want to stop this from happening!

Please help to win big by voting for us this January!

Tesco teamed up with Groundwork to launch its Bags of Help initiative across England and Wales. The scheme sees three community groups and projects in each of around 200 Tesco regions awarded grants of £5,000, £2,000 and £1,000 – all raised from the 5p bag charge.

Bags of Help offers community groups and projects across the UK a share of revenue generated from the 5p charge levied on single-use carrier bags. The public will now vote in store from 2 to 28 January on who should receive the £5,000, £2,000 and £1,000 awards.
