Over 250 people chose to come to the Magor Marsh Open Day and
what an afternoon they had. The sun shone for the first time in a while and the
showers stayed away although the wind did not abate. Everyone became thoroughly
absorbed in the multitude of activities available on the site.

Over 100 children took part in the pond dipping and
saw amazing creatures lurking in the depths of the reen – water
scorpions, sticklebacks and beetles, dragonfly nymphs and newtlets.
Many people joined the guided walks around the
reserve, others found their own way round the boardwalks. One young lady
discovered a lunar hornet moth in the bug hunting area—we don’t know who
was more excited—Julian Branscombe our chief executive or the child!
On the way round the reserve you could find out more
about the creatures that live here, about the usefulness of the plants
here, watch a pole lathe being used and gaze at the birds through
binoculars set up by Gwent Ornithological Society in the bird hide.
Along the way you could pause a read some of the amazing poetry sent in
by the local children. |

Back at the centre there were even more activities for
children and families – face painting, badge making, crafts and lucky dips.
There were lots of stalls raising awareness of other wildlife issues including
our GWT campaign against the levels motorway (CALM). Many people took time out
after a busy afternoon to take some refreshment in the Centre courtesy of our
local Chepstow Group.
We’ve already had fantastic feedback from those who came. Some
new volunteers came forward. We look forward to welcoming them. The day was a
great success for Gwent Wildlife Trust and our thanks go to all those who helped
out on the day, manning the stalls, organizing the car parks and selling the
refreshments. We would also like to thank all those who checked the marquees
beforehand—it saved a lot of time on the day. Together we have raised the
profile of Gwent Wildlife Trust and helped many people to become more aware of
the wildlife on their doorstep. Can’t wait for next year!!
