A new fungus for Gwent - Hericium cirrhatum

A fungus species new to Gwent has been found on a beech tree at our Silent Valley Reserve.  Sheila and George Spence from the Gwent Fungus Group identified it as Hericium cirrhatum.

Sheila said "Although the BMS database and most reference books say that this species is Red Data List I believe that it has now been removed from the list in the latest revision, this is however a great find and I have entered it, and the other species recorded that day, on the Gwent Fungus Database. Not only is it a first for Gwent it appears to be a first for the whole of Wales as shown on the species map on the BMS website".

The fungus was again found to be fruiting in exactly the same spot on a felled beech tree in Silent Valley reserve when the Gwent Fungus Group visited the site on Saturday 22nd September.  Not only is this a very unusual and rare toothed fungus but it has now astounded us by fruiting twice in one year.  We can only surmise that this is due to the strange weather we have been having recently.
