Directions  to Courses - 2008


The course locations are listed in alphabetical order.

Allt-yr- Yn

Exit the M4 at Newport from J27 and follow the signs to Newport City Centre on the B4591 (along Glasllwch Crescent). After about a third of a mile take the turning on the left into Ridgeway. Follow this road for just under half a mile, looking out for a turning to the left into Allt-yr-Yn. Take this turning for half a mile, before turning sharp left along a rough track towards Grove Farm. The reserve entrance is a short distance along the track before the farm. Car parking is limited to a small area outside the reserve (grid reference ST 299 888)

Angidy Valley

From Chepstow take the A466 signposted to Tintern. At Tintern take a left turn by a hotel and travel up the valley. In approximately 3km there is a Forestry Commission pull-in (just pass the Ravennest Wood fishing pond).  Grid reference ST 503 997.

Croes Robert Wood

From Monmouth, take the B4293 south signposted to Mitchell Troy and Trellech. Approximately 1 mile from Monmouth take the turning that forks left for Penallt, Trellech and Chepstow. Continue along the B4293 until reaching the valley of Trellech. On entering Trellech take the second right (just after the school) signposted Cwmcarvan. After 1 mile take the right fork, also signposted Cwmcarvan. The reserve entrance is 250m down the hill on the right. There is parking in a lay-by beside at entrance for 5 or 6 cars (grid reference SO 476 059).

Dingestow Court

From the M50 and Monmouth. Follow the M50 and then A40 to Monmouth.  About 200 yards after the traffic lights and before the tunnel take the slip road and signs for Mitchel Troy.  Follow the road through Mitchel Troy (take care not to follow the slip road back onto the dual carriageway), after approximately 2 miles turn right for Dingestow.  In Dingestow, turn left, go past the entrance to Dingestow Court and on to the sharp left hand turn up the drive to Seddon House.

From the M4 and Newport. Turn off the M4 at Junction 24 on to the A449.  After about 12 miles take the slip road for Raglan and then immediately turn right on to the road for Mitchel Troy.  After approximately 1.5 miles turn left at the cross roads, right at the T junction then right into the drive for Seddon House.

From Abergabenny. Take the A40 to Raglan, turn left (after the castle) on to the road for Mitchel Troy.  After approximately 1.5 miles turn left at the cross roads, right at the T junction then right into the drive for Seddon House.

Dingestow Village Hall

From the M50 and Monmouth. Follow the M50 and then A40 to Monmouth.  About 200 yards after the traffic lights and before the tunnel take the slip road and signs for Mitchel Troy.  Follow the road through Mitchel Troy (take care not to follow the slip road back onto the dual carriageway) and after approximately 2 miles turn right for Dingestow. Follow the road into the village and the village hall can be found on the left (grid reference SO 450 097).

Garn yr Erw Community Hall

Follow the B4248 from Blaenavon (north of Pontypool) to Brynmawr. Garn yr Erw Community Hall is just past the entrance to Garn Lakes on the left (grid reference SO 236 098).

Magor Marsh

From Newport, take the A48 east (towards Chepstow). At Langstone, turn right onto the B4245 for the village of Magor. On reaching Magor continue through the village and then take a turning on the right signposted Redwick. Bear right, and follow the road past the ruins of the Priory on your left and over narrow railway bridge. Immediately after crossing the bridge, turn left and follow the road for about half a mile. The reserve entrance is on the right - look for the sign at the front of the reserve. Park in the small car park beside the Trust’s Derek Upton Centre (grid reference ST 428 866).

Magor can also be reached by turning off at junction 23A of the M4 motorway and following the signs into Magor village on the B4245. From Newport there is a local bus service, and other bus services run to Magor village, please check with the bus companies (grid reference ST 428 869).

Parc Bryn Bach

From Abergavenny take the A465 Heads of the Valley road. At the Nantybwch roundabout, take the first exit onto the A4048. At the Crown roundabout, take the 4th exit into Merthyr Road, where the centre can be found.

From Newport take the A4072, then the A467 for Risca. At Crosskeys take the A4048 and head north to Tredegar. Continue through Tredegar keeping on the A4048 until the Crown roundabout. Then take the 2nd exit into Merthyr Road, where the centre can be found.

Parc Cwm Darran Centre

From the South, leave M4 at junction 32; follow the A470 then the A468 to Caerphilly. Take the A469 up the valley through Bargoed. The Park is then signposted (brown signs). The main entrance is about half a mile north of Deri (grid Reference SO 112034).

Pentwyn Farm

From Monmouth, take the B4293 south signposted to Mitchell Troy and Trellech. Approximately 1 mile from Monmouth, take the turning that forks left for Penallt, Trellech and Chepstow. After about 2 miles up the hill take the first turning to the left signposted Penallt. On entering the village of Penallt (1½ miles), turn left at the crossroads then right just before the war memorial (follow signs for the Bush Inn). Take the second entrance on the right into the Bush Inn car park. Drive across the Bush Inn car park though the field gate, and park between the modern barn and the orchard. Please do not park in the Bush car park or on the village green. The reserve entrance is reached by foot along the unsurfaced track that runs past the barn (grid reference SO 523 094). The course is held in the Restored Mediaeval Barn. For disabled access/parking please contact the office on 01600 740358.

Silent Valley

From Ebbw Vale, take the A4046 south, go straight over at the roundabout. After Waunlwyd village, join the bypass (do not take the Silent Valley landfill road). Take the next left to Cwm village, then take the left turn after the Bailey’s Arms - look out for the Nature Reserve sign on the right. About a third of a mile further on up the hill, at the top of Cendl Terrace, there is the nature reserve car park on the right. Walk northwards along a rough track through a flat grassy area to get to the reserve entrance (grid reference SO 187 062).

The reserve can also be easily reached from Newport by following the signs for the Festival Park Shopping Centre. From Newport, take the A467 towards Risca. Follow the road past Risca and continue up the valley until the turning on the left towards Cwm on the A4046. Drive through the village centre and cross over the main road. At the northern end of the village of Cwm, look out for the Nature Reserve sign on the left which points to the right up the hill towards Cendl terrace.

Springdale Farm

From Usk town centre (on the A472), turn into the square to take the B road towards Llanllowell, Llantrisant and Wentwood. (This is the turning opposite the B4598 to Abergavenny). Pass Usk prison on the left and continue for 2 miles until the road passes under the A449 dual carriageway bridge. Take the next turning to the left after the bridge and follow the narrow winding road for 2 miles. The reserve entrance is on the left at the top of the hill, just prior to a minor T-junction, opposite the Almhouses. There is limited parking opposite the Almhouses (grid reference ST 411 991).

Tirpentwys Local Nature Reserve

In Pontypool take the A4043 and turn into the Pontnewydd Industrial Estate. Turn left on to Estate Rd and then on to Plas-y-Coed Road (by the pub), then on to Pantygasseg Road. On the right hand side is a small car park by the reserve.

Wentwood

From the M4, leave at Junction 24 (Coldra roundabout) take the exit for the A48. Just after Penhow Castle, turn left and follow road to Wentwood Reservoir. Continue along, with the reservoir on your right until the T junction. Turn right and shortly afterwards is the entrance to the Foresters Oak car park (grid reference ST 429 939).

Wyndcliff

From Chepstow go up the A466. Follow the A466 round past St. Arvans. After about 1 mile Wyndcliff car park is signposted on the left (grid reference ST 532 974).
