The Biodiversity Impact Assessment Form

By compiling the information gathered in tables and notes from the previous pages, it should be possible to build up a very good overall impression of the site. Use this information to complete the Biodiversity Impact Assessment Form.

Guidance on completing the form is in italics.

 Biodiversity Impact Assessment Form.

Stage

Assessment and information.

Information to be provided.

1

What category of site/feature/species is likely to be affected?

Category:  A / B / C / D / E

You may tick more than one. For example many SSSI’s are also SINC’s. For definitions of categories see Table 1

You need not take any further action if the site/feature/species falls into category D or E

2

What are the feature(s)?

Features:

In the case of sites, list the features for which the site was designated. These will be stated in the SAC/SSSI/SINC citation.

In the case of species, list the feature as the species concerned, e.g. Great Crested Newt .

3

What type of impact will development cause to the feature(s)?

  • Direct loss of habitat or other features.
  • Direct loss in abundance or diversity of species.
  • Impacts at landscape level.
  • Impaired regenerative capacity.
  • Reduced water absorption/retention of the site.
  • Conflict with BAP targets.
  • Conflicts with published conservation objectives.
  • Deterioration in Favorable Conservation Status of statutory sites e.g. Special Protection Areas (SPA), Special Areas for Conservation (SAC), Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).
  • Other ......

You can select more then one impact.

4

Is further information needed?

Is further information required to fully assess the impacts?      Yes / No

If the answer is Yes, what further information is required?

  • More information on development.
  • More information on feature(s).

If there is insufficient information, request further details from the applicant / LPA.

5

What will the magnitude of the loss be?

Feature(s):   Impact magnitude category:

For each feature indicate whether the impact magnitude is:

  • Major negative

  • Intermediate negative

  • Minor negative

  • Positive

  • Neutral

For definitions of the above see Table 5

You need not take any further action if the impact is neutral or positive

6

What is the overall impact significance?

Feature(s):   Significance:

For each feature indicate whether the significance is:

  • Very large adverse

  • Large adverse

  • Moderate adverse

  • Slight adverse

  • Neutral

  • Large – slight positive

You need not take any further action if the impact is neutral or large – slight positive See Table 6.

7

Could the impacts be partly of wholly mitigated?

Feature(s):

For each feature indicate whether mitigation could help to prevent, reduce or offset the impact to an acceptable level.    See Table 7

8

Would the impact be acceptable if mitigation was possible?

Yes / No

Reassess the significance of the impact if mitigation were to be put in place. For each feature indicate whether the significance is:

  • Very large adverse
  • Large adverse
  • Moderate adverse
  • Slight adverse
  • Neutral
  • Large – slight positive

See Table 6

The next stage is to contact the planning officer responsible for processing the application.  See Part 1 for detailed information on how to do this.
